Challenge by Choice

Do you really need to push yourself to the extremes to realise the personal growth benefits of a Kingswood residential?

At Kingswood, we’re most interested in supporting and encouraging children and young people to grow in resilience and confidence, but that doesn’t mean taking away personal choice. In fact, making decisions, taking calculated risks and being accountable are key skills learnt by taking part, or not. Children and young people are most at ease and likely to try something perceived as difficult when they feel safe and cared for. This is where they enter their 'growth zone'. Delivering adventurous learning experiences in a nurturing, friendly, safe and secure environment is exactly what we do at Kingswood.

Our belief is in expanding comfort zones to improve resilience, wellbeing and confidence rather than pushing children and young people to completely step outside of theirs. Challenge by choice is our way of delivering activities, and it makes all the difference when it comes to learning and personal development.

How to expand your comfort zone

Have a growth mindset

Realise you can grow from both setbacks and opportunities to learn something new.

Adapt slowly

Learning isn’t a race. Don’t think so much about the result from the start. Ease into new challenges and take your time.

Change routines

Learn new things by doing something different and perhaps even something you wouldn’t find so comfortable.

Set yourself a goal

Be clear on what it is you want to achieve and the steps you need to take to achieve it.

Acknowledge your fears

Being scared is o.k. Feeling the fear and doing it anyway is how we learn and grow as people. There is fluidity in everything and opportunities to try again.

Surround yourself with influencers

Taking part in challenges with peers, who may find taking on certain challenges easier, has a positive impact and influence.

Most importantly, we make sure every child and young person appreciates the huge amount of courage that goes into taking on new challenges. A sense of fun and enjoyment are always thread through Kingswood’s outdoor adventure programmes for lasting impact.

According to renowned author, Dale Carnegie:

By continually taking time to explore what is really happening internally, being honest with ourselves about the fear we’re feeling, and then intentionally committing to overcoming the mental blockers we face, we are able to expand our comfort zone, increase our confidence and live more enriched and well-rounded lives, free of self-imposed restrictions.
