In March 2024, Dr John Allan was invited to present to the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) on 'Building a rope of resilience for students' success in education'.
This interactive webinar examines the construct of psychological resilience, which constitutes a range of positive adaptive behaviours acquired through outdoor adventure education (OAE) and enables students to cope with disruption, bounce back from adversity and follow a trajectory of growth (bounce-beyond ability). Resilience has long been recognised in school-based education as an effective policy for developing students’ well-being and academic success.
Using the analogy of a rope of resilience that students walk along, this webinar examines teaching and learning approaches associated with resilience-building. Informed through academic literature and empirical data, young people can develop an on-going personal profile of their rope of resilience and strengthen individual strands of their rope across contexts and time. A strong rope is made up of interconnected strands of cognitive competence, emotional intelligence, and social connectivity – these are protective and promotive resilience factors emanating from their experiences. A well-developed thicker rope enables students to maintain balance along their journey in education and to recover quickly should they fall from their rope. Students who have sustained long-lasting resilient outcomes following outdoor adventure programming have been able to achieve more favourable academic outcomes than those who did not retain their resilience.
Founded in 1988, the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) is a registered Society in Singapore with its Headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand.
