Although the Government aren’t currently considering full phone bans in schools for under 16s, there has been a lot of speculation. Would taking phones away help children concentrate more or would it create feelings of worry and frustration?
We asked Headteacher, Ewa Eddy from Hilltop Primary School, what she thought about phone free policies and not allowing phones on residential experiences. Here’s what she said...
Our decision to ask students not to bring their phones on residentials is rooted in our commitment to creating an environment where they can fully immerse themselves in the experience. We believe that by stepping away from screens, students can better engage with each other, participate actively, and build stronger connections. Additionally, it encourages them to develop independence and focus on being present in the moment, which we feel enhances the overall value of the trip.
We’ve observed some wonderful benefits! Without phones, students tend to be more engaged and genuinely connected with each other, which fosters a strong sense of community. They’re more inclined to participate fully in activities, show curiosity, and develop problem-solving skills without. We’ve also noticed a boost in self-confidence, as students learn to navigate new environments independently and communicate more openly. The time away from screens allows them to relax and be fully present, which helps them return feeling recharged and often with new friendships and valuable memories. The results have been overwhelmingly positive!
We are honest with parents from the offset and clear we will not change our minds. Parents and students do ask but we stand firm with this decision. If needed staff on on hand for emergency situations to call home.
We believe it is important that students have their phones to be able to independently walk to and from school but school itself is a mobile free zone and students must hand over their phones to teachers if they are brining them into school.
