“Our new Skills4Life programme builds and measures the resilience of young people to move beyond pre-conceptions of their ability. Through progressive exposure to challenges which have meaningful, real-life application, the positive impact upon a young person’s adaptability and growth view of themselves becomes almost tangible.”
Dr John Allan, Kingswood’s Head of Learning & Impact
Dr Allan led the world’s largest study in evaluating the impact of outdoor adventure (OA) residentials upon the adaptive capabilities of new university students: their resilience and strength based functioning.
Compared to non-OA induction practices, students reported greater levels of emotional and social development, positive attitudes towards the institution and increased academic performance, both in the short-term and over time.
Those attending an outdoor adventure programme achieved a 9% greater increase in their resilience, making them significantly less likely of dropping out from their studies. Residential experiences such as mastering new skills, feeling in control and developing new relationships, heighten student resilience and allow university inductees to adjust, grow and persevere.
